What is your theme song, Reader?
You know, the one you listen to when you are FEELING yourself? The one that reminds you of your greatness (and also amazing lip-syncing skills)? The song with the lyrics that inspire you to live the life for who you are now - not the person you put on like a shiny shirt at 23 and which now hangs in tatters (and is waaayyy too small!)
We should all have at least one of these songs close at all times. It is too easy to fall prey to limiting beliefs about ourselves, what we want in our work and lives, and if we can ever get it.
You see, Iβm exactly like you and every other person who ever wanted to change careers:
Scared. Uncertain. Longing for many other things than what I was doing now. Stuck. Held captive by limiting beliefs like: βI just wonβt make enough money doing [new thing] so just forget itβ and βItβs so much safer working for someone else.β
Those saboteur thoughts had been with me for decades. Even after too many toxic work experiences βworking for someone else.β
It wasnβt safer. I never stopped wanting other paths. But I ignored them for years.
I didnβt believe myself when I longed for other paths (almost ANY other job). I was holding fast to some deep fears.
I overcame them and got unstuck through coaching.
And so can you.
What would it be like to look forward to September (the unofficial "New Year" for most of us) with a clear plan of who are you are now, what you REALLY want and the confidence to go get it?
I know many of you have Summer Fridays - what better way to use that extra time?
And if you are recently laid off (I am so sorry), you may have outplacement services to help with resume formatting - but do they guide you in how to DECIDE what's next.
No.
OK, here is my theme song - the one that reminds me I can leave the painful work (and life) past behind now.
I have never felt happier in my life!β
β
βSharon Jones + The Dap-Kings Better Thingsβ
I'm a better woman than I have been
'Cause I don't think about way back when
It takes two to love but only one to leave
It was you who did that dirty deed
β
I got better things to do
Better things to do
Better things to do
Than remember you
β
It's a brighter day than ever before
'Cause I don't think about you no more
I got a new life and I'm feeling right on
My head is high and my spirit is strong
